Ayurveda offers a different perspective on self-care. One that is not about optimisation, but about balance, rhythm and presence. Ayurveda provides a gentle framework for understanding the body, the seasons and the role of ritual in your daily life.
The wisdom of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the ancient science of health and wellbeing that originated in India over five thousand years ago. Rather than focusing on symptoms alone, it views the body, mind and environment as deeply interconnected and focusses on preventing health issues from arising through lifestyle, nutrition and ritual.
At its core, Ayurveda is guided by the elements earth, water, fire, air and ether. These elements form the foundation of all life and are present in varying proportions within each of us. According to Ayurveda, balance is maintained when these elements are in harmony, and imbalance arises when one or more become excessive or depleted.
Elements, seasons, and your constitution
Each person is born with a unique constitution, determined by the relative dominance of the elements. This constitution influences not only physical traits, but also energy levels, sensitivities and tendencies toward imbalance.
In Ayurveda, these elemental patterns are described through three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata is associated with air and ether, Pitta with fire and water, and Kapha with earth and water.
The doshas are not static. They shift in response to lifestyle, emotions and the changing seasons. Each season carries its own dominant energy, which can either support or challenge our natural balance. Vata is most present in autumn, with its drying winds and movement. Kapha increases in late winter and spring, as the earth becomes heavier and more damp. Pitta rises with the warmth and active energy of summer.
All doshas ask for greater attention during their natural season. Understanding the relationship between the elements, the seasons and your own constitution allows self-care to become responsive rather than prescriptive, guided by your own awareness.
The role of ritual and oil in Ayurveda
Rituals play an essential role in Ayurveda. They create moments of grounding and repetition, helping the nervous system settle and the body return to balance. Oil, in particular, is considered deeply nourishing. Not only for the skin, but for the entire system.
Applied with intention, oil rituals support warmth, circulation and connection to your body. They invite slowness, touch and presence, transforming daily care into a meaningful practice.
